Answers to the most common questions

What is SPII?
A three-week academic and homestay program that introduces American life, language and culture to university students from Japan. Students take classes at Bethel University from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
What is SPII's philosophy?
SPII was founded on the biblical principals of welcoming the foreigner and showing unconditional love toward others. We partner with local churches and Bethel University to create meaningful connections between Japanese university students and American families. While most of our host families are motivated by these same beliefs, a host does not need to be a person of faith to participate. We welcome all families who wish to share friendship, hospitality, and cross-cultural understanding.

Why homestays?
The homestay is really the heart of the experience for the students. By living with an American host and creating relationships, the learning becomes personal and meaningful. It is a transformational experience for both student and host.
Who are the students?
The students come from three universities in Japan: Kwansei Gakuin University, the University of Niigata Prefecture and Kumamoto Gakuen University.

When is the program?
Mid-February to early March

How does transportation work?
We have vans and carpools throughout the metro area, with a goal of making transportation convenient for hosts and students.
Are hosts paid?
Yes. Hosts receive a $300 stipend to cover basic expenses involved with hosting a student. Students bring their own spending money.

Who can be a host?
Anyone! Couples, retirees, singles and families with kids. Hosts should have native or near-native English speaking ability.
What are the hosts' responsibilities?
Your student enters your home just like a new family member and takes part in your normal routine, whatever that is. Whether you are grocery shopping, attending soccer practice or just staying home for a pizza/movie night, it doesn’t matter. Everything is totally new to your student and becomes a learning experience that is greatly appreciated by these wonderfully gracious young people. As a host you provide a private bedroom for your student plus breakfast & dinner.

How are we matched with a student?
We take the information you provide about your life and match you with a student with whom you have something in common. Each student is unique. Some prefer the lively activity of a home with children while others prefer the calm of a home without kids.
Is there training?
Yes. We have an orientation meeting where we give you all of the information you need to have a fantastic hosting experience. We also provide support throughout the program.
